From the People Who Brought Their Watches In
A selection of feedback from clients who have used one or more Brasswind services.

I brought in a Seiko from the early 1980s that had belonged to my father. The dial had deteriorated and I was worried they would want to replace it entirely. Instead the report came back with a careful cleaning and stabilisation — the original dial is intact and the watch is wearing well again. The written notes they provided were a nice touch.

The rotor on my automatic had been grinding for months. I had asked at a couple of other places and got vague responses. Brasswind identified the problem clearly from a brief email, gave me an honest estimate, and had it back to me within three weeks. Winding is smooth now. The only reason I have not given five stars is that I had hoped for an earlier slot — though I understand they are not a large operation.

Very straightforward to deal with. I emailed a description of my watch, received a clear and useful reply the same day, and booked a drop-off for the following week. The dial work was done within the timeline they gave me, and the difference is noticeable without looking like a replacement. I appreciated that they did not oversell what was possible.

I collect vintage watches and have used several workshops in Bangkok over the years. The difference at Brasswind is the transparency about what can and cannot be done. I had a dial with a crack that I hoped could be repaired — they explained clearly why it could not, which I actually appreciated more than if they had tried and failed. The rotor service on a different piece was well done.

My grandmother's watch sat in a drawer for fifteen years. The assessment from Brasswind told me exactly what state it was in, what was worth addressing, and what would cost more than the watch justified. The written report is thorough enough that I can share it with my family and with an insurer. A genuinely helpful service for something I had been putting off for a long time.

I posted my watch from Pattaya after emailing to ask about it. The instructions for packing were clear and practical. The rotor service came back looking and winding well. Communication throughout was prompt. I would have liked a slightly longer condition note on return, but that is a minor point — the work itself was solid.

Case Studies
Three Pieces, Three Situations
Case 01 — Dial & Hand Work
A 1970s Swiss watch with a severely faded chapter ring
Challenge
The client's watch — a Swiss automatic from around 1974 — had a chapter ring so faded it had become almost illegible in low light. Previous owners had apparently applied some kind of adhesive to one of the hands, which had left residue around the hand tube.
Approach
The residue was carefully removed from the hand without affecting the finish below. The chapter ring underwent a stabilisation treatment to arrest further fading — it was not possible to restore the original colour, but the legibility improved significantly. Lume was documented and left undisturbed.
Outcome
The watch is now wearable daily without difficulty reading the time. The original dial and hands are intact. The client has a written note of the lume condition to form a baseline for any future assessment. Completed in 18 working days.
"I was expecting them to say the dial needed replacing. Instead they found a way to work with what was there. That was the outcome I was hoping for."
Case 02 — Rotor Service
An automatic movement winding inconsistently after years in storage
Challenge
The watch had been stored in a drawer for approximately seven years before the client began wearing it again. The rotor moved freely but winding was unreliable — the watch would run for a few hours and stop even with normal wear.
Approach
Inspection found that the reverser wheels had partially seized from dried lubricant. The winding train showed no significant wear but required cleaning and re-lubrication. The rotor bearing was also serviced as a precautionary measure given the storage period.
Outcome
The watch is winding correctly with a full power reserve maintained through normal daily wear. Completed in 14 working days. The client was informed mid-service about the reverser wheel condition before proceeding, and agreed to the scope before work continued.
Case 03 — Heritage Assessment
An inherited pocket watch with unknown history
Challenge
A client received a pocket watch from a relative's estate. Its origin was unclear — possibly Swiss, possibly from the early twentieth century — and its condition was unknown. The family wanted a professional view before deciding whether to pursue any further work or sell the piece.
Approach
A full written assessment was carried out covering case material and condition, dial condition including any damage or previous restoration, and a visual inspection of the movement. Photography was taken of each element. A care plan was developed for the current condition.
Outcome
The family received a detailed written report with photographs, a care and storage plan, and an honest assessment of what further work might involve and at what approximate cost. No further work was undertaken — the report was the deliverable. Completed in 9 working days.
"The report gave us the information we needed to make a decision as a family. It was genuinely useful rather than a sales exercise."
